Barber practice test: state board theory questions with every answer explained

This barber practice test gives you 60 state board theory questions, mixed in the same proportions as the NIC National Barber Theory outline, with a note on every answer option. Take the set first; the notes below the quiz tell you what your score means and where to spend the next week.

60 barber theory questions, weighted like the exam

Pick an answer, read why each line is right or wrong, then take the next ticket. The chips filter by domain if you only want your weak spot; the last ticket shows your tally by domain.

Question 1 of 60 · Hair Care

How should a barber choose the cutting technique for a new client?

Pick a line. The reason it is right — and why each other line is wrong — opens here.

How this practice test maps to the exam you will sit

The set is built on the NIC National Barber Theory outline: 60 items, 50 of them scored, four answer options with one key, 90 minutes. Ten items on the real form do not count, and you will not know which ones, so every question here gets the same attention.

NIC publishes the weights as percentages, not as item counts per domain. The 21 / 6 / 24 / 9 split below is how this set rounds 35 / 10 / 40 / 15 into 60 questions.

Texas and California do not use an NIC theory exam. Texas gives a Texas-developed written exam through PSI that adds a licensing and regulation section plus manicure and facial items (PSI Texas bulletin, ); see the Texas page. California has used a PSI exam since July 1, 2022 and has had no practical since January 1, 2022 (California board, ); see the California page.

Your score by domain and what to study next

The tally on the last ticket splits right and missed by domain. Read it as a to-do list sorted by points, not as a grade. The thresholds below are our study triggers, not a pass mark: the pass mark comes from your state.

Hair Care Services under 16 of 24Hair Care Services guide. Chemical services first: 8 of the 24 questions.

Facial Hair and Skin under 6 of 9The shaving and facial sections of the study guide: razor strokes, contagious beard conditions, electrotherapy poles.
Implements under 4 of 6A single session on tool care and disinfecting implements. It is 10% of the outline; stop there.

PSI, Pearson VUE and NIC practice exams vs free question sets

The exam makers sell their own practice. NIC sells practice exams for its national exams through its vendor PROV, with no refunds, and a $35 Barber Practical overview video (NIC exam resources, ). PSI’s national exams page links a test-prep store and a free PSI prep app (PSI national exams, ). If Pearson VUE delivers your exam, its candidate handbook for your state is the document to read before you buy anything.

Milady and Pivot Point chapters behind the questions

The NIC theory bulletin lists three references (bulletin references): Milady Standard Barbering 7th edition (©2026) first, the 6th edition (©2017), and Pivot Point Fundamentals: Barbering (©2022). Each question here is tagged to an outline sub-area, not a chapter number, because chapter order moves between editions.

These questions are keyed to the outline the textbooks are cited for, so they work with either Milady edition. Prep built on the 5th edition is out of date.

  • Infection control misses → the textbook’s infection control chapter, then the decontamination levels
  • Chemical services misses → the chemical texture and haircolor chapters, preliminary tests first
  • Skin and scalp misses → the disorders chapter: what you refuse to serve and what you refer
  • Shaving misses → the shaving chapter: razor positions and strokes by facial area

This is the written exam; the practical is a different test

These 60 questions prepare the theory exam. The practical is scored on what you do at the chair, task by task, and the NIC practical bulletin warns that an unsafe work area may fail the whole exam, however good the haircut.

Sources: Barber Styling practical bulletin, Barber 1 practical bulletin. Some states also use NIC’s Barber Styling Written Practical, a written exam about practical procedures: 60 items, 50 scored, 120 minutes.

Questions people ask

How many questions are on the barber state board exam?

It depends on the exam your state gives. NIC’s Barber Theory exam has 60 items, 50 of them scored, in 90 minutes; NIC’s Barber Styling Theory has 110 items, 100 scored. As of October 2026, Texas’s written exam has 85 scored items plus 8 unscored (PSI Texas bulletin, Jan 1, 2026), and California’s PSI exam has 85 scored items plus 10 pretest items in 120 minutes (California board); details are on the Texas and California pages. Other states publish their counts in the candidate bulletin.

Does PSI have practice tests?

PSI’s national exams page links a paid test-prep store and a free PSI prep app. Buy vendor practice only if PSI delivers your state’s exam, and use it as a last-week check, not as your first study tool.

How hard is it to pass the barber exam?

We have found no published pass rate, so distrust any number you see. The theory exam is won in two domains: Hair Care Services and Scientific Concepts are 75% of the NIC outline. Get both to two thirds or better on this set before you book.

Is a Quizlet set enough to pass?

Not on its own. Flashcards teach vocabulary, but nobody checks their keys and they are not weighted by domain. Use them for terms and use a weighted set with explanations to find what you miss.

What score do you need to pass the barber exam?

Your state sets it. The NIC bulletins do not state a national pass mark, and states that use their own exam set their own. Take the number from your board or testing vendor.
